Brett F. Paulson - Alumni Achievement '77

As President and Chief Operating Officer at The Clearing Corporation, Brett F. Paulson is a leader in the financial sector of the corporate business world. He is responsible for the direction and day-to-day management of the corporation and reports directly to the Board of Directors. The Clearing Corporation is an independent, stand-alone, AAA-rated clearinghouse that has handled clearing and settlement for the Chicago Board of Trade, the MidAmerica Commodity Exchange, Eurex US, the New York Board of Trade, BrokerTec, Merchants Exchange, ChemConnect, the Chicago Climate Exchange, Hedge Street and the North American Energy and Credit Corporation. It ensures the financial integrity of the clearing settlement process of all trades executed on several changes across the world and provides similar services to other international exchanges/clearinghouses.

A 1977 graduate of Lewis University, Brett earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. He also holds a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis in Finance from DePaul University. While still pursuing his undergraduate studies, he was employed as a scientific programmer at Argonne National Laboratory, designing and programming data flow systems to analyze and model nuclear power plants. After graduation from Lewis, Brett took a position as a senior systems analyst at International Harvester Company. During four years with this company, he progressed from working as a programmer to becoming a senior programmer analyst, and assumed project leader responsibility within just two years.

He joined Harris Trust and Savings Bank in 1981, and rose through the ranks, beginning as a database administrator and concluding his employment with the company in 1990 as Assistant Vice President of Applications Development. From April, 1990 to January, 1994, he was a Director of Global Markets Technology for Continental Bank and later ISSC, a subsidiary of IBM.  Prior to joining The Clearing Corporation, he was a Vice President, Fixed Income Trading Technology at CS First Boston in New York City.

Brett joined The Clearing Corporation in May of 1995, working in the Information Systems Department as the Director of Business Application Development, Database Administration. He was named Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer in December of 1999, and served as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the company from December, 2002 to February, 2005 when he was appointed to his present position.

Currently very active with the FIA Technology Committee and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) Technology Advisory Committee, Brett has served as an officer for several technology-related user groups and committees. He is a member of the Economics Club of Chicago, the Bond Club and the Executives Club of Chicago. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, Lumity and the Community House in Hinsdale, Ill.

A resident of Hinsdale, Ill., he and his wife Shirley are the parents of six children.
