September 2014

An alert to all Golden Flyers! Homecoming is just around the corner and I hope that many of you will be able to attend the annual Golden Flyers luncheon on Saturday, October 4th at 2:00 until 3:30 p.m. in the University Dining Room (cafeteria). (You can register online at alumni.lewisu.edu/Homecoming.) We will be inducting the graduates from 1964 into our prestigious group. For those interested, there will be mass at 4:00 p.m. in the Sancta Alberta Chapel.

We will also be announcing two major initiatives at this luncheon:

  • The Golden Flyers Endowed Scholarship, which will be targeted for grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Golden Flyers.
  • The establishment of an activities calendar that would include several events during the year for Golden Flyers.

A committee of Golden Flyers will be recruited to help formulate and implement both of these initiatives.

During September, I had the opportunity to once again meet with a few alumni from before 1964:

  • Former baseball player from the 1962 NAIA World Series 3rd place finishers, Bob Kozlowski ’62. Bob taught biology for over 30 years at East Leyden and Coal City high schools.  He greatly enjoyed the personal campus tour conducted by chemistry Professor Brother Pierre of the Science faculty.
  • Bob and Priscilla Borgstrom invited me to their home in Morris, a visit I always look forward to. “Borgie” ’59 was a baseball player at Lewis before he entered the Navy and then was an owner of McGrath Office Equipment until he retired.  The parents of eight children and 30 grandchildren, Bob and Priscilla stay closely involved in alumni activities.
  • Ken Nelson ’63 and Pat Sullivan ’65 have their weekly breakfast meetings in Shorewood on Wednesdays and graciously invited me to join them.  Pat has written a book, “Attitude: the Cornerstone of Leadership,” and regularly speaks on that topic. He has a newsletter (psully100@comcast.net) that is read by many people.

Please let me know if you would like a personal tour of the outstanding campus facilities, especially when I am at Lewis once a month.  And also keep me posted for any updates on Golden Flyers so that we can communicate this information to all Golden Flyers. As usual, I have included several pictures of Golden Flyers.

Go Flyers!
