Alumni Sweethearts 1970s

Kevin Newquist '78 and Jacqueline (Samuelson) Newquist '79

Somewhere in between classes and campus activities, Jacquie, '79, and Kevin Newquist ’78, found each other. Kevin, a sophomore Elementary Education major, and Jacquie, a freshman Nursing major, began the rest of their lives together on the Lewis University campus.

Since their days of attending campus concerts in the gymnasium for the likes of Melissa Manchester, Heart and Dave Mason, and KISS – yes, that KISS, at the start of their musical career - they have maintained close friendships with many of their college friends and continue to give back to the school that brought them together.

“Lewis is important to us. It’s where we met and fell in love,” says Kevin. “There are a lot of great memories of the campus and all of our very close friends happen to be from Lewis. We like what the university stands for. We want to continue giving students the opportunity to get from it what we did when we were here.”

From annual gatherings with old friends to alumni events on and off campus, the Newquist family values the education, experience, and life-long relationships from their college days.

“Lewis gave us the start of this incredible foundation that pretty much encompasses our family, our close friends, and the careers that we have built. Lewis is more than a school; it’s a family.”

John Sherry '78 and Eileen (French) Sherry '77

Eileen and I met in the Sheil Hall basement during our sophomore year. Eileen's room was next door to a good friend of mine, Betsy Derk. Betsy introduced us in September of 1975. My roommate Ron Ray and I spent a lot of time in Sheil Hall just hanging out and studying (ha) and in the Spring of 1976 Eileen and I start dating. We went to several TKE Glitter and Gold nights and attended many other campus activities, including a Kiss concert, dances and baseball games. We were married on March  31, 1979 in the Sancta Alberta Chapel on campus by Fr. John Fogarty and we now have two grown children and are enjoying being empty nesters.

Guy Shelley '75 and Donna (Knapik) Shelley '75

We had known each other casually in the music department, but were put on a project together in history and philosophy of education class to research Darwin. We became instant soulmates. Class started on Monday and that Friday he proposed. We graduated in June, 1975 and were married a few months later on August 16, 1975. Life together has been nothing short of amazing and wonderful ever since.

Joel Stava '78 and Deb (Baron) Stava '78

Joel and Deb met at Lewis sophomore year and were friends for quite a while. Then Joel asked Deb out the day before a religion final at the end of junior year. Friendship and dating blossomed into love and they were married two weeks after graduation. They've been married for 32 years now and have three grown children, all married.
